A family in Midland has been pushed from their home after it was badly damaged by flames and smoke on Sunday.

The fire broke in the early afternoon at a house on Wellington Street. Fire crews arrived to find thick black smoke billowing out from the windows.

Crews say the fire started in the basement, near the laundry area, before it made it made its way up through the rest of the house.

The smoke damage is so bad residents will not be able to live there until major repairs have been made.

There was no one home at the time of the fire.

The cause is under investigation.
