Following weeks of hot and dry weather more municipalities across the region have issued fire bans.

Collingwood, Georgina, New Tecumseth, Oro-Medonte, Ramara and Severn are among the latest municipalities to issue a total fire ban.

Fire departments across Muskoka issued a total fire ban Tuesday after upgrading the fire danger rating to extreme. This means campfires, burning of brush, open flame and fireworks are not allowed.

Beausoleil First Nation also issued a total fire ban on Thursday for Christian Island, Beckwith Island, Hope Island and Cedar Point.

What rain that has fallen hasn’t been enough to drive moisture into many of the region’s fields and forests.

Fire chiefs say the ban will remain in effect until significant rainfall is received throughout the region.

On Monday, fire departments in Dufferin County and Wasaga Beach issued burn bans.

Fire danger ratings for most of the region are either set to high or extreme. The rating means the chances of starting a brush fire in those communities is very likely if there’s an open flame.
