Five people have been taken to hospital after a fiery crash on Highway 400 near MacTier on Monday morning.

Provincial police say a Dodge Journey ran off the highway, striking several guide posts at around 9:30 a.m. in Wahta. The SUV erupted in flames, but investigators are unsure if it happened before or after the crash.

Five people, including a number of children, were taken to hospital as a precaution. The SUV was completely destroyed by the fire.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which police believe was a result of driver error. Investigators say the driver is facing charges, but wouldn’t provide specifics, outside of saying alcohol was not a factor.

The highway was closed for about an hour, but has since reopened.
