Construction workers often worry for their safety when drivers speed by.

Although there are many warning signs and pylons around construction zones throughout the province many drivers are still speeding.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, three road construction workers were killed in 2011 on the job while hundreds more were injured.

Construction worker Gordon Watt has been working on roads and highways for five years and in that time he has had many closed calls.

“Close, close has been where you actually have to throw the flag down and almost run out of the way. Run out of the direction of the flow of traffic because he's coming right at you,” said Watt. “I was flagging and you know you go slow to stop and the cars don't pay attention they run through and they potentially almost hit you. They come within inches and they could take someone's life and you know everyone wants to go to their family at the end of the day,” he said.

Police are reminding drivers that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones.
