The Crown told the jury during closing arguments that Andrew Fallows moved the dying body of Shania Slater from the passenger seat to “escape consequences.”

The court has heard that the 28-year-old Sebright man was driving with no licence, no insurance and was allegedly impaired when his pickup truck crashed into a concrete barrier on Highway 11 in 2014.

He has pleaded not guilty to impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving and dangerous operation causing death

"Andrew Fallows was desperate to escape consequences," said the Crown today. “He wasn't concerned.”

The Crown said Fallows even tried looping his arm into the passenger seatbelt, which wasn't working.

"There he sat, passing himself off as a passenger."

DNA evidence showed Fallows' blood on the steering wheel, airbag and cracked windshield. Slater's blood and hair were on the passenger side.

"It's as plain as the nose on your face. Andrew Fallows was the driver," said the Crown.

The defence countered by saying "is it possible that Andrew Fallows was the driver? Yes. It might even be likely, but there are too many gaps in the evidence to lead you to convict my client."

For the Slater family, it's been a difficult trial.

"It's really hard to see Andy. We used to go to high school together. He hasn't said sorry or anything, not a drop of tears coming out of his face. Through all of this, it hurts a lot to see him, it really does," says Melissa Slater.

The judge will now give his instructions to the jury on Tuesday and that's when they'll begin deliberations.
