Mere hours after ending an extreme cold weather warning for the region, Environment Canada has reissued the alert, as temperatures get set to drop, again.

The weather authority says temperatures are expected to hit around -30 C with the wind chill on Friday and into Saturday morning.

The extreme cold weather warning is in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
  • Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago
  • Innisfil - New Tecumseth - Angus
  • Orangeville - Grand Valley - Dufferin County
  • Shelburne – Mansfield
  • Caledon
  • Bruce Peninsula - Sauble Beach – Tobermory
  • Owen Sound - Blue Mountains - Northern Grey County
  • Newmarket - Georgina - Northern York Region
  • Uxbridge - Beaverton - Northern Durham Region

But it’s not all bad news. Environment Canada says temperatures will start to rise Saturday afternoon; beginning a slow trend of warmer temperatures.

Record breaking

Residents waking up in Muskoka on Friday were greeted with a new record low temperature for Feb. 27. According to Environment Canada, the mercury dropped to -33.4 C, breaking the previous record of -31.4 C.

It was a similar situation in Wiarton and Buttonville where records were broken. The temperature in Wiarton fell to -26 C from -25.5 C. Buttonville smashed their previous record of -19.7 C, registering -24.6 C on the thermometer.

This isn’t the first time temperature records were broken in the region. Barrie, Muskoka and Wiarton all broke records for the coldest Feb. 16.
