The first day of classes also marked the first day many schools across Simcoe County tried out new security measures.

Starting today the doors will be locked during school hours. Anyone wanting to get in the school will have to be buzzed in through an intercom system at the front door.

The new security policy will be enforced at all elementary schools across the province.

“Currently 66 of the 72 school boards are taking part in the initiative--it's security enhancement for all elementary schools,” said John Legere, a superintendent with the SCDSB.

The Ontario government made the security changes following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012, where 26 people were killed, including 20 children.

Most parents seem to be fine with the fact that they can no longer just walk into the school.

“At least I know no one is going to get in,” said parent Kristin Buchanah.

The Simcoe County District school board introduced the tougher, new security measures at Portage View Elementary School in Barrie last year as part of a pilot project. If school staff believes someone is suspicious, they can refuse entry.

“If it was someone I didn't recognize or if they appear agitated, we won’t let them in, said Portage View principal, Sandy Barker.

The SCDSB admits the new measures will take a while for parents and students to get used, but the school board says the program is here to stay.
