Duckworth St. in Barrie will be closed for four nights starting on Monday as part of interchange improvements.

The closure is part of the ongoing Cundles Rd. - Duckworth St. and Hwy. 400 project.

“It will allow the workers to put the girders up safely,” said Senior Construction Engineer for the City of Barrie Robert Wargala. “Rules and regulations don't allow vehicular traffic to pass underneath the girders while they're rigged up on a crane.

The road will closed in both directions at the Hwy. 400 bridge starting Monday at 10:00 p.m.

Bell Farm Rd. and St. Vincent St. will be used as the detour route, and the interchange ramps will remain open with the exception of the Duckworth St. westbound to southbound Hwy. 400 ramp.

“My biggest concern is citizens coming out here in the middle of the night trying to go to the hospital for an emergency that they're going to be aware and to know in advance to go the other way around because you can go on St. Vincent St. and through Bell Farm,” said Councillor of Ward 3 Doug Shipley.

Hwy. 400 can be accessed through Bayfield St. or from Cundles Rd. East.

The closures will be nightly from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. from Monday through early Friday morning.

Barrie transit route 6A/6B will detour using Livingstone St., Cundles Rd., St. Vincent St., Bell Farm Rd., Duckworth St., and back onto Georgian Drive.

Affected Stops include:

  • #223 Pacific Avenue
  • #216 Cundles at Duckworth
  • #950 Livingstone Street East
  • #222 Pacific Avenue
  • #215 Cundles at Duckworth Street

Crews are widening the roads to create more room for cars going south.

The construction is scheduled to be complete in late 2016.
