People are dropping off cash and calling in donations at the Canadian Red Cross in Barrie to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake.

The biggest donation made on Monday at the Barrie branch was $500 – money that will help those in Nepal who have lost so much in the 7.6 magnitude earthquake.

“We work with the Nepalese Red Cross. They put out the appeal to other international societies and the money will be forwarded to them and spent in the appropriate way,” says Peter McGuinness, a volunteer with the Red Cross. “Food, shelter, clothing, whatever’s needed.”

Since Saturday's earthquake, $1.8 million has been donated to the Canadian Red Cross. Local Catholic churches will also be collecting money to send to Nepal.

“People do want to help. When they see, especially in cases like this, where some of the poorest people on Earth are affected in this way, they do want to help,” says Bill Steinburg of the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto.

The Archdiocese of Toronto started accepting donations for earthquake victims on Monday afternoon. The International Catholic Relief Agency is donating $3.3 million and sending 10,000 shelter kits to Nepal

A Canadian disaster relief team from the Trenton Air Base is also on the way. Medical crews and firefighters who will help on the ground.

The Red Cross has also offered to send a mobile field hospital to Nepal.
