A young lab had to have one of her hind legs amputated after being shot in the Alliston area earlier this month.

Bella, a three-year-old lab mix, worked on a farm up until a couple of weeks ago when Dr. Stefani Warmington of the Animal Hospital of Beeton says she was likely mistaken for a coyote and accidentally shot.

“By the end of everything it was pretty evident that it was a through and through wound that we believe was from a bullet,” she says.

Warmington says Bella’s owners have given up on her, but the Alliston Humane Society and the staff at the Beeton animal hospital didn't.

“I think she can have an amazingly full life – three legs have not fazed her at all,” Warmington says.

Caren Dougall is Bella's foster parent and says she has plenty of love to give and just moves a little different than most dogs because of her amputated leg.

“She was able to run 10 acres of the property back to back yesterday and loved every minute of it.”

Warmington and her staff donated all their time, but still need about $1,800 to cover Bella's medication and Dougall says Bella's lovable personality is priceless.

“She's a little bit opinionated at times, but that's the working dog in her. So when she decides she's not quite ready to get up and come have breakfast, you have to negotiate with her, but she's mostly a sweetheart.”
