A new paper argues there is an ethical obligation to reform public policy on sports-related concussions.

The article, written by two Ontario doctors, appears in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and says children are suffering “often preventable brain injuries”.

In Simcoe/Muskoka almost 1,200 people suffered from a concussion in 2012.

“A lot of concussions go unreported or undiagnosed so that number is not representative of what we truly have for concussion injuries” says Mia Brown

The academic paper makes a number of suggestions including increasing the size of playing fields, decreasing the number of participants, banning the use of head in games like soccer, and significantly suspending those involved in head injuries.

The article also notes the importance of publicly funded education about concussions for children.
