New details about the expansion of GO train service on the Barrie line are expected in the coming weeks.

Metrolinx is expected to increase the number of trains on the line starting next year.

That will be the first step in a bigger plan to eventually electrify the railroad and offer all-day service all week and on weekends.

The government will be the one to outline the specifics and the dates, but Metrolinx held a public meeting in Barrie last night to update people on the broader plan.

“There’s a lot of interest. Everybody has said the faster we get more transit the better it is. There’s a lot of gridlock around, everybody wants it done quickly,” says Karen Pitre, a spokesperson for Metrolinx during a meeting on Monday night in Barrie. “We got a lot of construction and a lot of projects on the go and we’re moving as fast as we can.”

It's not clear exactly how many more trains there will be in the first phase of the service expansion early next year, but CTV News has been told the details will be announced "very soon."
