The Soares family is celebrating the birth of their second child, Sabrina who arrived very suddenly Tuesday at the family’s home in Barrie.

The couple had planned a home birth, but the baby came so quickly that the midwife hadn’t arrived and dad Bruno Soares had to act quickly.

“My mind was racing a thousand miles, please let this baby be okay,” said he said.

It was a very unusual labour and delivery that required quick action by dad, Bruno.  Deborah Soares’ water never broke, and Sabrina was born along with the amniotic sac still intact.

The midwife was on the phone with Bruno and instructed him what to do.

“I ripped it open and next thing you know our baby opens its eyes and just look at me,” he said. “It was surreal, something out of a movie and I knew right then she was okay.”

The midwife, Sarah Golledge arrived only a minute after this rare birth. Golledge says there is about a 5 percent chance of a baby being born with the amniotic sac still intact.

“I guided him through on the phone as I was coming into the house, he did an awesome job,” she said.

Mom and baby are doing well and thankful for a quick thinking father.

“I don’t know how to explain my feelings, it’s amazing and I was proud of my husband,” said Deborah.

As for the couple’s two year old daughter Kaitlyn, she’s still getting used to having a little sister,  but loves it so far.

“She’s so cute.”
