One person is dead after a collision between two cars in Vaughan, sent one of the vehicles crashing into a pair of cyclists.

York Regional Police say the crash happened at the intersection of Dufferin Avenue North and Glen Shields Avenue on Monday at around 6 p.m.

According to investigators, a Mercedes Benz entered the intersection and collided with a Hyundia vehicle. The Mercedes continued forward and struck two cyclists and a light pole. Police say the pole then fell on the cyclists.

A 47-year-old woman from Richmond Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. The second cyclist, a 55-year-old man from Richmond Hill suffered serious injuries. The occupants of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.

An autopsy will now be conducted to determine an exact cause of death.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 34-year-old Toronto man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The accused will appear before a Newmarket court on Aug. 6.

Investigators are also looking for witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
