A correctional officer in Penetanguishene could face disciplinary action after posting on social media about the living conditions of an inmate in solitary confinement.

Chris Jackel, an officer in the segregation unit at Central North Correctional Centre and a former union president, took to Twitter in May to fire off four posts about conditions at the prison.

In one of the posts, Jackel shared an exchange between a correctional officer and a manager.

“What are we gonna do with this Seg I/M [segregated inmate] who has been covered in feces for 8 days, and has been seen eating it?” the officer is posted as saying on May 4.

“He’s been placed on the transfer list”, the manager is posted as replying.

Jackel made a follow up post on May 8, saying “Four days later. No change to inmate. Still in urine/feces soaked cell. Still eating his own feces.”

The inmate, as described by Jackel on Twitter, is hostile and mentally ill.

CTV News reached out to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services for comment on the matter. Spokesperson Brent Ross said in a statement, “These are confidential human resources matters between the employer and the employee. It would not be appropriate to discuss the specific details publicly.”

On July 19, Jackel received notice that he would be going before management for an allegation meeting over “inappropriate use of social media.”

The notice alleges that Jackel violated employer policies and states that he could face disciplinary action.

While Jackel’s actions have stirred the managerial pot, they are being commended by members of the public.

A Twitter user named @Angelica_KH replied to one of Jackel’s posts, writing “You should be accredited for your #care of #HumanRights #spotlight! Management be shamed for this abuse. Zoo animals are better kept.”

@Alexhundert tweeted, “As a person formerly imprisoned in that seg unit, thanks for this.”

Others called him brave and a whistleblower.
