The fence in Balm Beach that was the center of controversy for nearly a decade has been taken down.

Mike Iurincic grew up here and for the first time in a long time has noticed an unusual level of optimism.

“A sense of community now, it feels like we are together now rather than separated”, said Iurincic.

The two meter high cedar fence was so controversial because it cutoff public access to the waterfront. It was built in 2006 by the former property owners John and Elisabeth Marion, after they confirmed and exercised their right under the boundaries act their property extended to the water’s edge.

The fence caused a flurry of bitter and sometimes violent disputes. It was attacked with chain saws, burned and even violent altercations broke out among the property owners and people in the community. It was so bad Tiny Township put up surveillance cameras to help keep the peace.

Brandon and Tanya Spring purchased the waterfront property over the winter and removed a portion of the fence that extended down to the waterfront last month.

The Springs didn’t want to comment on their decision to remove the fence, but acknowledged that actions speak louder than words and public access is what it appears to be.

Neighbours say the removal of the fence will finally relieve tension in the community.

“The atmosphere has completely changed”, said resident Wendy Burns. “We have our beach back.”
