TORONTO -- Some commuters travelling through Toronto's Union Station will have to adjust their routine now that a commuter train concourse at Canada's busiest transit hub has been closed for major renovations.

The Bay Street concourse, which connects to GO Transit trains, shut down Sunday for expansion work that will take until 2017.

The construction is part of a broader, $640-million project to revitalize Union Station, which city officials say is used by more than 250,000 people every day.

Once the work is completed, GO Transit says commuters will have better access to train platforms, a new retail level and the underground PATH network.

In the meantime, the transportation agency is urging commuters to factor in more time to make their connections and find their way using the York Street concourse.

GO Transit staff were on hand Monday morning to assist commuters.

"Remember to be patient during this mornings Commute through Union. .BayConcourse has closed. GGOtransit staff there to assist. .GOSafely," a GO Transit safety officer tweeted.

While some seemed thrown off by the change -- photos posted on social media showed at least one person trying to open locked doors to the shuttered concourse -- most appeared to take it in stride.

"People are surprised that Bay Concourse is closed at .Toronto .UnionStation?! GGOtransit did a great job of warning us! .ttc .gotransit," one person tweeted.

"Agreed. I don't even take GO and I knew it was closing after being in Union Station for 15 seconds last week," another replied.
