A City of Barrie worker was airlifted to hospital after he was struck by an SUV Wednesday morning.

It happened around 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of Mulcaster Street and Penetang Street in downtown Barrie.

Police say the city employee, 65, was working as a flagman and was standing in the middle of the intersection holding a construction sign when he was struck by an SUV driven by a man in his  90's.

“They had two flagmen out and someone drove off of Mulcaster and went through the stop sign,” said Sgt. Mark Hyatt with Barrie Police. “The gentleman was fully marked out in safety gear.”

The city worker was taken Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with serious injuries and later airlifted to a Toronto hospita, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what lead to the SUV hitting the man.

“We don’t know if they stopped or if they didn’t and turned left and struck the city employee,’ said Hyatt.

Ath this point, charges haven't be laid.

The Ministry of Labour has also been notified.
