The City of Barrie is literally cheering for your litter, well, sort of.

A new pilot project aimed at keeping the city clean has select garbage cans along the waterfront that  give off a faint ‘round of applause’ when used.

The two bins are equipped with a motion sensor/sound boxes and anyone who throws garbage into one of them will hear either ‘crowd applause’ or a ‘deepest bin’ sound. The devices will be in place this weekend, in time for Kempenfest.

The City’s parks team will be benchmarking litter levels before the pilot and tracking any changes to litter levels during and after the pilot.
