Wild swings in temperature are responsible for hazards on some local roads, and that's brought out the pothole crews.

City crews have been filling in potholes all day today along many older roads.

“We've had a lot of freezing and thawing over the last few days,” says Tim McLean, City of Barrie. “So everything is moving underneath. Water is creeping into the roads and freezing and popping out and making holes.”

There are a lot of holes, especially along roads that are vulnerable. And they need to be patched up.

“Typically roads that may be older haven't been resurfaced in recent years. So the northeast end is an area where we’re focusing on right now,” says Craig Morton, roads and parks operations manager.

Crews in Barrie went through three tonnes of cold mix today filling in hundreds of potholes.

And most of the work will be done along the older city streets like Duckworth Street.

If you come across a bad one, you can contact the city or you can report it on your smartphone. The app PingStreet is free to download and you just enter your location – “Barrie” – and file a report.

The same kind of work isn't happening everywhere across our region, though. In Orillia, the city is still trying to clear away all that snow from last week’s storm.

And in Aurora, the roads are in pretty good shape. Crews there are only patching up problems that are called in.

In Barrie, though, the problems are hard to miss. And the potholes aren't going away. Permanent asphalt won’t be put in until spring.
