Every year on April 28 services across the country honour and pay respects to workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of workplace related incidents.

To mark the National Day of Mourning the North Simcoe Muskoka and District Labour Council dedicated a new monument at the entrance to Tudhope Park. The monument commemorates all those workers who died, were injured or suffered an illness as the result of work.

At Barrie city hall and Caledon town hall flags were lowered to half-mast.

Last year in Ontario, 208 people were killed at work or died from an occupational disease.

The Day of Mourning was enshrined in national legislation by an Act of Parliament on February 1, 1991.
