Police are investigating after a truck left the road in Bracebridge on Thursday and sunk in the Muskoka River.

OPP got the call just after 5:00 p.m. after the truck left Beaumont Drive, crashed through a dock and into the water.

Harold Reed was at home when the truck crashed through his dock.

“I looked out in the water and could see waves and ripples but couldn’t figure out what that was.”

Brian and Kathy Hammell also heard the loud crash and couldn’t believe what they saw.

“It was actually floating and people were scrambling,” said Kathy.

“As they were coming out of the cab of the truck and once the water hit where the window was opened it was submerged in about three seconds,” says Brian.

The Hammell’s called 911 and rushed to shore to help the husband and wife who managed to escaped the sinking truck.

“By the time I got out here they were pretty much to shore and I just helped them out of the bank and into the house, put a blanket around them until police came,” adds Brian.

The woman driver was treated for hypothermia and released from hospital and the man didn’t suffer any injuries.

The investigation is ongoing but police say alcohol is not considered a factor.

“Because the truck has submerged we haven’t had a chance to examine it. She did describe she had some difficulties with it. Right now what we’re dealing with is whether there was a mechanical issue with the vehicle,” says OPP Constable Samantha Bigley.

Police say they are hoping to find the cause once the truck has been removed from the river.

The OPP and Ontario Ministry of Environment say the truck will recovered on Monday.
