This has been the busiest weekend on Lake Simcoe so far this boating season and police have been extra busy making sure everyone on the water has all the required safety equipment.

Last year, 20 boaters died in Ontario and of those, 17 people were not wearing lifejackets. The law requires boaters to have a lifejacket or personal flotation device for every person on board.

While most boaters were in compliance, it’s not the only piece of equipment police are looking for. Officers with the South Simcoe Police marine unit says boaters should also have a flashlight, oar, flares, heaving line and a whistle.

Police say many boaters stopped on Sunday didn't meet those requirements. It's a big concern for police.

“Every second counts. If you do get into trouble all these other components will assist you to get back in your boat or signalling someone to provide the assistance that you need,” says Const. Steve Black.

Police say assuming you have everything on board is a big mistake.

“If you don't know where your safety equipment is or it’s not in working order, it's not going to help you,” says Black.
