OPP divers recovered the body of young college student Ethan Stokes in the Scugog River near Lindsay on Tuesday.

Police say the Fleming College student fell through the ice on Sunday morning.

OPP Underwater Recovery Teams located Stokes body about an hour after going below the surface.

Stokes, who was from Holland Landing, was last seen at a downtown Lindsay bar celebrating his 21st birthday.

When his friends couldn’t find him, they posted his picture all around town asking if anyone had seen him.

Police received a call on Monday saying there were a set of footprints leading to a fresh hole in the ice, but no footprints leading away.

“I knew when I came here last night and saw the footprints that someone was getting pulled out of there today,” said Stokes’ friend Taylor Ronaldson. “I was just hoping that it wasn't him.”

No one knows why Stokes walked out onto the ice.

“I was actually the one who has to tell his mom that he was the one who was missing,” said Stokes’ friend Alex Matthews. “To hear her whole mood change was just devastating.”

Police are pleading with people to stay off the ice entirely because the thickness is just too inconsistent.
