Barrie police say an improvised explosive device (IED) had to be disrupted in the city’s north end on Saturday.

Two IEDs were found at around 2 p.m. after a small fire was extinguished near the water treatment building at Sunnidale Park. Investigators say one of the IEDs was the cause of the fire.

As a precaution the area was cordoned off, while officers with the Barrie police explosive disposal unit examined the devices.  It was later determined that the remaining IED needed to be disrupted.

At around 7 p.m. officers successfully disrupted the IED – no injuries are reported.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
