Police say a Barrie man has been charged in connection to a gunpoint abduction in the city’s downtown.

Barrie police charged the 35-year-old man on Sunday with pointing a firearm, weapons dangerous and breach of probation.

According to investigators, a 36-year-old Toronto woman, who was considered a suspect in the Saturday abduction, was not involved and has been released.

Police say the abduction happened around 11:50 a.m. near Metzger Studio on Dunlop Street East, when a man exited a Dodge Magnum with a black gun in hand.

The man allegedly made several demands for the victim, a 24-year-old woman from Midhurst, to get in the car. She complied and the Magnum took off.

The woman was later found with the two suspects in Springwater Township with the help of the OPP. Upon closer inspection, police say the firearm was determined to be a pellet gun.

The victim is now safe with her family. Police originally believed she was under the age of 18. Investigators say they will not be releasing any further information about the connection between the victim and the accused.

The public is being thanked for aiding in the investigation and providing information that lead to the arrest.

The accused will be held for a bail hearing on Monday in a Barrie court.
