Barrie police say a man has been charged after allegedly collecting the social security payments to his parents, who have been dead for 17 years.

United States Social Security Administration launched an investigation in 2012, when the accused’s parents would have turned 100.

Officials were trying to confirm their contact information and residence details, when they discovered the couple had died in 1998.

Police allege their 75-year-old son has collected more than $200,000 from their social security since his parents’ death.

Toronto and Barrie police were contacted to continue the investigation. On Monday, the Barrie man was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000 and utter forged documents.

The accused has been released on a promise to appear before a court in January.
