If you've ever lost a pet, you know how upsetting it can be.

A young girl from Barrie is devastated over her pet bird that got away, but she's not just sitting around, waiting for the pet to return home. Peanut is April Rhynold's little buddy and she’s doing everything she can to get the bird back.

They're together all the time, and April considers herself the bird whisperer. Here's why.

She's taught her cockatiel to do tricks, to sing, and even to dance.

“It's been really hard without him because it's not the same,” she says.

Last month Peanut escaped; he managed to get outside.

“I was calling him and crying at the same time and then he flew across the trees and I couldn't hear him anymore,” she says.

Now with dad by her side, she is canvassing the neighbourhood and doing everything she can to try to find her pet.

Rhynold has put up about 30 posters and has created Twitter and Facebook pages. Through social media, the search for the bird is getting attention from around the world.

People from as far away as Australia and even Japan have been on the page called “Please Come Home Peanut.”

“Kind of flabbergasted, really,” says her dad John Rhynold. “When I see her website had so many members, that's pretty impressive for someone that's just 16.”

It's the kind of attention April Rhynold wants - she's working hard to get Peanut noticed.

“I just want to prove that if you keep the ads up and keep getting the word out, that they will soon come home,” she says, adding giving up isn’t an option.

And she isn't giving up hope that her best friend is out there somewhere.
