Four Barrie firefighters have signed up for a tough competition.

They are competing in the Firefighters’ Combat Challenge in Phoenix, Airzona in November.

“They call it the toughest two minutes in sport,” said Barrie firefighter Cam McLeod. “I wrestled through university and high school and I thought that was tough until I tried this.”

The firefighters are asked to run as fast as they can in full gear while also completing emergency scenarios, many of which require extreme physical exertion.

They’ll be competing against other firefighters from around the world.

“Going against some of the best teams in the world, you get teams from all over Europe, there's a team from Mexico competing this year, said firefighter Max LaFramoise. “We're going to see some tough competition.”

For now, the local competitors are spending all of their spare time training and hitting the gym to make sure they represent Barrie well.

The Barrie team is hoping to cut a couple seconds off their time and set new records in the relay event.
