Barrie’s city council will discuss a proposal next week to extend Bryne Drive.

The city’s general committee approved the proposal on Monday, which means it will move to the next step – city council.

There were five possible routes to choose from that would connect the two sections of Bryne Drive. The committee chose a route that strikes a balance of keeping the road far enough away from Highway 400, as well as neighbourhoods.

“It balances the need to accommodate a future interchange at this location, as well as balancing impacts on residents and the environment,” says Jacqueline Weston, director of engineering. “So tonight, general committee essentially said that it can go forward to council for consideration next week.”

Watson says the extension would be an alternative route for people to get through the city and would help with congestion on Mapleview Drive.

Environment assessments still have to be conducted in the area. The city estimates the total cost for the project would about $12 million.

Council will talk about the proposal next Monday.
