Barrie city council agreed Monday night to hold a byelection to replace former Ward 7 councillor John Brassard.

Brassard’s seat is currently vacant after he won the Barrie-Innisfil riding in last month’s federal election for the Conservative Party. He took a leave of absence from his city council seat in September when he launched his campaign.

Brassard is a former firefighter and has been a city councillor in Barrie’s Ward 7 since 2006

A byelection would cost more than $40,000.

A date for the byelection hasn’t been set yet, but city officials say it would likely be held in February.
