One person is in hospital after a fire at a house on East Street in downtown Barrie Tuesday morning.

The Fire department was called to the scene at 7:45 a.m. for reports of a fire in one of the units.

There are four apartments in the house and investigators believe the fire started in the upstairs unit.

According to Barrie Fire, a woman jumped out of her second story apartment window to escape the fire and landed on the driveway.

"I could hear her jump through the wind," said Athony Philemonds, who also managed to escape the burning the home with his wife. Philemonds said the woman was covered in soot from head to toe.

The woman was taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries.

"Her jumping saved her life," said fire prevention officer Samantha Hoffman.

Philemond went back into the burning house to pull out another man who is nearly blind.

"He led me to door and I may or may not have made it," said Allen Bresso, who was rescued by Philemond.

A fourth woman managed to safely escape her apartment.

The fire is under now under control and investigators will begin to determine the cause.

Investigators with the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal were on scene assisting with the investigation. A cause hasn't been determined; investigators believe the fire was caused by careless smoking.

The fire department says the house had smoke alarms, but is not sure if they were all working.

Damage is estimated to be at $50, 000.
