York Regional Police say they have made an arrest in connection to a New Year’s Day sexual assault in Newmarket.

Following a week long investigation, police say they have arrested and charged a 37-year-old Newmarket man with sexual assault causing bodily harm.

On Jan. 1, an 18-year-old woman was walking on a pathway near the Newmarket GO bus terminal on when she was allegedly forced to the ground and sexually assaulted.

Officers spent Wednesday handing out pamphlets and talking to GO bus riders in town. A composite sketch of a suspect was also released earlier this week.

The accused will appear in a Newmarket court on Jan. 12.
