More than a hundred people are expected to be in attendance at local rallies protesting recent violence in Virginia.

The first of two Anti-White Supremacy Solidarity Vigils will take place at Barrie city hall on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the rally will honour Heather Heyer, the woman who was killed when a car drove through a crowd of people at a white nationalist gathering last week in Charlottesville, Va.

The group is also standing in solidarity against white supremacy, which they say is just as prevalent in Canada as it is in the United States.

“The extreme right has mobilized in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. And it is extremely important that we organize resistance to their rise in strength and that we have a presence in the streets,” the page states.

The group says their message is a simple one: Standing against racism and white nationalism.

A second rally is planned for Saturday at Barrie city hall at 1 p.m.
