An early morning fire that ripped through an abandoned Barrie home has been deemed suspicious.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Essa Road and Mapleton Avenue on Tuesday, at around 2:30 a.m. for a reported fire.

The home, which has been abandoned for many years, sustained significant damage. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre for treatment.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate.

It was determined the fire was deliberately set.

The investigation has been turned over to Barrie Police.

The cause has not been determined and the damage estimate has not been released.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.
