There were nearly two dozen overdoses in Barrie during a five day period last week.

According to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, 22 people were sent to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre for overdoses. This was between Aug. 9 and 13.

Officials say this is an increase of 50 per cent when compared to similar five day studies in the last two years.

“It’s very difficult to know what types of drugs are being illegally sold on the street so people who are using any substances recreationally need to take extra care, and to carry naloxone in the event of overdose,” said Dr. Lisa Simon, associate medical officer of health in a statement.

However, the health units say some of these overdoses involved heroin and OxyContin.

Officials also warn that fentanyl is being mixed into other street and prescription drugs. They say many people overdosing on fentanyl aren’t even aware of it.

“Anyone using drugs recreationally should ensure they have someone with them when using, use small quantities to start with, and make a plan and know how to respond to an overdose.”

Police in Kawartha Lakes issued a similar warning over the weekend after three suspected cases of heroin overdoses.
